About the Department
The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1964 to teach chemistry to the Pre-University students of the college with a staff strength of three. Mrs. Starlet Denson was in charge of the Department. Feeling the necessity for the study of Chemistry at the graduate level, the then Principal, Mr. J. M. Arthur, with his untiring efforts, got permission from the University to start B.Sc. degree course in Chemistry in the year 1968.  The student strength was only twenty-eight.
Till 1968 no college was offering Chemistry as major in B.Sc(pass) in the western part of kanya kumari district.  Students found it inconvenient to travel from remote villages to Nagercoil town to study chemistry at the U.G. level due to poor economic background. Chemistry offered ample employment opportunities in teaching as well as in R&D laboratories in chemical industries.  Keeping this in mind, chemistry major was started in 1968 with full infrastructural facilities. Our aim was fulfilled to the maximum extent as lots of chemistry graduates from our college(who could not go for higher studies due to various reasons)  are working in many schools all over the country including northeastern states.  Those who could afford to pursue higher studies for P.G programs or even research are working in colleges, Universities, and as scientists both in India and abroad.
In June 1968, Mr.C.D. john took charge of the Department as professor and Head. His noble efforts and guidance helped the department to make great strides.  He with the help of a structural Engineer, made blue prints for the new block.  But it materialized only after his demise, under the headship of Mr. N. Padmanabha sarma.  The department was shifted to the PTA Science Block in the yea 1993.  The student strength was increased to thirty-two.
The department got its laurel. when one of the students of the second B.Sc Batch, Dr. M. Christudhas joined the department as staff.  He got the second rank in M.Sc chemistry from kerala University. He got his Ph.D under the faculty Improvement programme of the  University Grants Commission. And again, a student of the 1982-1985 Batch. Mr. C. Isaac Sobana Raj joined the faculty in 2000. He is a gold medalist in M.Phil.
