The department of Mathematics was established in the year 1964 with prof. M. vedamuthu as the only Lecturer to teach Mathematics to the pre-University class students. B.Sc. Degree course in Mathematics was started with as intake of 35 in the year 1965 with the objective of imparting scopeful higher education to the people of educationally backward taluks, Kalkulam and Vilavancode Ditrict. Prof. D. S. Spurgeon took charge as the Head of the Department and served till June 1974. Prof. P. Swamidhas took over as Professor and H.O.D in July 1975 and served till June 2002. The undergraduate Department functioned with five staff members.  M.Sc. Degree Mathematics course with an intake of 20 students was introduced in 1981.  From then on wards staff members have been serving  in the Department.
