It is a well-known fact that commerce was a highly attractive subject during the seventies. Taking into consideration the increasing demand for this subject, the Management introduced Commerce group at the Pre-University Level in 1976. The initiative came from Prof. Arthur j Harris the then Principal and correspondent. He showed special interest to introduce Commerce Group in this college.
With the shedding-up of pre-University course from colleges, the commerce department of this college withered away in the year 1979. It sprang to life once again with the introduction of B.Com Degree course in 1982. Mr.H. Sathiadas was appointed the first Head of the Department.
Commerce beng an attraci r course, he demand for it is always on the rise(Table annexed). Most of the students hail from a very poor financial backrground. Their educational background also is very poor. And its imperative to note that more than 90%b of the students admitted are first generation students.
The first batch of this department came out in the year 1985. The students who have gone out successfully from this department are placed in attractive positions in different organizations.
The department is located in the main Block on the western side of the ground floor. It has a staff room and three classrooms, all adequately furnished.
