Class : I M.Sc Physics
Places visited 1. Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching
Station (TERLS), Thiruvananthapuram.
2. Priyadarsini planetarium, Thiruvananthapuram.
Date of visit: 22, January 2020
As
part of field work, the students of I M.Sc. Physics have visited TERLS and
Priyadarsini planetarium, Thiruvananthapuram on 22/01/2020. Dr. S.C Jeyakumar
and Prof. S. Sindhusha took care of the field trip. The students witnessed the
launch of a sounding rocket RH-200. The payload is of weight about 10 kg. The
altitude of rocket set in 80 km in atmosphere. The average flight time is about
15 to 20 minutes. It is commonly used for aeronomy, the study of the upper
atmosphere, which requires this tool for in situ measurements in the upper
atmosphere. It is also used to make
research in ultraviolet and x-rays in earth’s atmosphere and microgravity
research. Because of low cost and
short lead time, sounding rockets are advantageous.
After
rocket launching, departed from TERLS at 12.15 pm and reached Priyadarsini
planetarium at 2.15 pm. At the planetarium visited the science gallery. A lot
of earlier inventions and working models helped the students to gather more innovations
on science. At 3.15 pm the students were permitted for a 3D show on solar
family. It helped them a lot to know about the planets and their nature.
Finally, reached the college campus at 7.45 pm.
