Theme: “Science,
Peace, and Nuclear Disarmament”
The Hiroshima
& Nagasaki Peace Observance Seminar was organized jointly by the Tamil Nadu
Science Forum (TNSF), NMCC Science Club, and the Program Committee -Department
of Physics, Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam, on 10 August 2026
at the Physics Seminar Hall. The programme commenced at 1:40 p.m. with the
theme “Science, Peace, and Nuclear Disarmament.” The seminar aimed to
create awareness among students about the consequences of nuclear warfare and
to emphasize the role of science in promoting peace and protecting humanity.
The programme
began with the prayer song presented by J. Jessica and team, seeking divine
blessings for the successful conduct of the event. This was followed by Tamil
Thai Vazhthu.
The Welcome
Address was delivered by Dr. D. Aruldhas, Head, Department of Physics &
Research Centre, who warmly welcomed the dignitaries, faculty members, and
students. The Presidential Address was delivered by Dr. C. H. Arun, Principal
i/c, who highlighted the importance of remembering the tragic events of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki and encouraged the younger generation to work towards a
peaceful future.
The keynote
address was delivered by Mr. J. Janith, Secretary, TNSF, on “80 Years After
Hiroshima: Science for Peace, Not Destruction.” He spoke about the atomic bombs
Little Boy and Fat Man, their devastating impact on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and
the suffering of innocent people, especially children and civilians. He
emphasized the importance of using science responsibly for peace, humanity, and
nuclear disarmament.
A documentary
video was then screened, providing a visual account of the historical events
associated with Hiroshima and Nagasaki and their lasting impact on humanity. The Peace Pledge was led by Dr. S. E. Joema, Associate Professor,
Department of Physics. The pledge reminded the participants of their
responsibility to promote peace, harmony, and unity and to stand against the destructive
use of nuclear weapons.
The Concluding
Remarks were delivered by Mr. A. Neelambaran, Joint Secretary. He highlighted
the impact of major historical conflicts, including World War I, World War II,
and the Vietnam War, and spoke about Hitler and the destruction caused during
his rule. He emphasized the importance of learning from the past and promoting
peace and harmony to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The programme
concluded with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. B. Leena Grace, Science Club
Convenor. She expressed gratitude to the organizers, dignitaries, faculty
members, and students for their valuable contributions and participation. The programme concluded with the National Anthem.
