The Department of Zoology organized a programme to
commemorate World Lion Day on 10 August 2026 at 2.30 PM in the UG Zoology Lab.
The programme commenced with a prayer song rendered by Saniya Misha, N. and Kerena
Evangelin of III B.Sc. Zoology, invoking God’s blessings for the successful
conduct of the programme. This was followed by the welcome speech delivered by
Archana A. S., III B.Sc. Zoology, who warmly welcomed the faculty members and
students to the World Lion Day celebration.
The Presidential Address was delivered by Dr. A.
Premjith Jinham, Head of the Department of Zoology. He highlighted the
significance of World Lion Day and emphasized the importance of lion
conservation and the protection of wildlife and their habitats. He also
encouraged the students to develop a greater interest in wildlife conservation
and actively participate in academic and departmental activities related to
biodiversity and environmental protection.
The Talk of the Day was presented by Neethu S. D.,
II B.Sc. Zoology. The talk focused on the importance of lions as apex predators
and their role in maintaining ecological balance. It also created awareness
about the major threats faced by lions, including habitat loss, human–wildlife
conflict, and other conservation challenges. As part of the presentation, she
screened an informative video depicting the life cycle and life of a lion in
its natural habitat.
The programme continued with the Prize Distribution,
conducted by Dr. Adline Anita, Assistant Professor of Zoology. As part of the
World Lion Day celebration, various competitions, including pencil
sketching, painting, slogan writing, and quiz, were conducted. A
total of 9 students participated in pencil sketching, 14 students in painting,
14 students in slogan writing, and 26 students in the quiz competition. The
quiz competition was conducted in two stages. Initially, the 26 participants
were divided into three groups—A, B, and C—and competed through three rounds.
Based on their performance, Group A was selected for the final stage. The
selected group was further divided into three teams of three members each. The
final quiz was conducted on 10 August 2026 at 1.30 PM, comprising four rounds.
The winners of the final quiz were awarded prizes in recognition of their
outstanding performance. The first three winners in the other competitions were
also awarded prizes, while consolation prizes were presented to all
participants in appreciation of their enthusiasm and active participation.
