The
Vermicompost Pit, located between the PTA block (Room No. MR 147) and the
Dennis block, serves as a key facility for sustainable waste management on
campus. It efficiently processes organic waste, primarily food scraps, by
converting it into nutrient-rich compost through the use of earthworms. This
eco-friendly process helps reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills while
producing valuable compost that is used to enrich the campus gardens and green
spaces.
The
college supports this initiative with green-colored bins placed strategically
around the campus for easy segregation of organic waste. The collected waste is
systematically processed under the supervision of trained non-teaching staff,
who ensure the smooth operation of the plant through regular monitoring and
maintenance.
By
diverting food waste from traditional disposal methods, the Vermicompost Plant
reduces the college’s environmental footprint, lowers greenhouse gas emissions,
and promotes ecological sustainability. The compost produced enhances soil
quality, supporting the growth of healthy plants and improving the aesthetics
of the campus landscape.
This
facility also serves as an educational tool for students and staff, raising
awareness about sustainable waste management practices and encouraging
eco-conscious behaviors across the campus community.
